Kentucky "Vacation" PDF Print E-mail

I just had the most wonderful summer vacation in Kentucky!

I went to Bowling Green Kentucky the last week in June to help with the birth of a good friend of mine, Liz.  This was her fourth baby, and she had a good track record of going on time with no major problems.

Liz and Steve inherited some land in Kentucky and moved out there when she was 8 months pregnant. She asked me to come out and help her with the birth. I had helped Liz with her last baby, and it went fast! We were hoping I would get there before she went into labor.

I took two of my sons with me. Her due date was June 23rd. I got there on the 21st, and when I checked I did not really think she would have the baby the week I was planning to stay. She just didn't seem ready. We had already made an agreement that if she didn't have the baby while I was there, she would come back to Houston and stay with her mom until she had the baby. But she surprised me and had the baby on the 25th of June. It was a great, normal birth and she had a boy!

She had the baby early on a Wednesday morning and I didn't even lose a night's sleep and my boys didn't even know I was gone until I called to wake them up!

We had a great time there. I found out Kentucky and Tennessee are beautiful states. I'd never been there before. We went to Mammoth Cave National Park, Abraham Lincoln's birthplace, Nashville, the place where the Battle of Shiloh was fought, and several other Civil War Battle sites (you know the Civil War is my favorite subject next to midwifery). My boys loved all the wildlife we saw, especially the snakes and the fireflies at night.  What a great summer vacation!

Studies done comparing hospital and out-of-hospital births indicate fewer deaths, injuries, and infections for homebirths supervised by a trained attendant than for hospital births.
